Stain Removal

The Stain Removal Guide: What Actually Works on 14 Common Stains

Practical, fabric-safe treatment for oil, wine, blood, ink, sweat, and more.

Three rules cover most of stain removal: act fast, use cold water first, and never put a stained item in the dryer. Heat sets protein and tannin stains permanently.

Oil and grease need a surfactant, not water. Dish soap worked into the fibers before washing lifts far more than any pre-wash spray. For set-in oil, repeat before drying — never after.

Wine and coffee are tannin stains. Cold water flush, then an oxygen-based soak. Avoid soap on fresh wine; it can set the pigment.

Blood is protein. Cold water only, then an enzyme detergent soak. Hot water will cook the protein into the fiber and you'll never get it out.

Sweat and deodorant buildup respond to an enzyme presoak plus a white-vinegar rinse. Yellowing at the underarm is usually aluminum reacting with body oils, not dirt.
