How Often Should You Actually Wash Your Bedding?

Evidence-based frequencies for sheets, duvets, pillows, and mattress protectors.

· 5 min read

Sheets and pillowcases should be washed weekly. You shed roughly 1.5 grams of skin daily and sweat through the night; a week is the practical limit before dust mite populations climb.

Duvet covers every two weeks, the duvet insert itself two to three times per year. Pillows should be washed quarterly and replaced every 18 to 24 months.

Mattress protectors every one to two months. They're the barrier layer doing the most work, and they're the item people forget entirely.

If anyone in the household has allergies or eczema, tighten sheet frequency to twice weekly and wash at sanitizing temperature with a fragrance-free detergent.
